Whatsapp will start displaying ads on your status from 2020

We have always known Whatsapp as an ad-free messaging platform owned by Facebook. Looks like things are about to change pretty soon. That’s because the company has announced its plans to start displaying ads on the platform starting from the year 2020. This announcement was made at the annual Facebook marketing summit held in the Netherlands.

With this new development, users will see ads being displayed in the “Status” feature just like it is in Instagram Stories. As you may recall, Instagram users see sponsored ads in the Stories feature and users can swipe up to see the content of the ads.

HOW IT WILL WORKS

Well, things are going to work very differently from how it used to be as we know it. When the ads are displayed in the Status, if you click on the ad what you’ll see is the content of the ads not the profile photo of the person.

Everyone has been wondering how WhatsApp makes money for the company considering the fact that it doesn’t run any ads. Now we know how the company is planning to monetize the platform in order to generate revenue.

Honestly, I’ve been expecting something like this for a long time. This is because there’s no way a huge platform like Whatsapp will not be generating any income for its owners considering how expensive Mark Zuckerberg bought it.

As it is right now, Whatsapp is the world’s most popular messaging platform. It has more users than Facebook Messenger. Whatsapp currently has over 1.5 billion users and is present in over 180 countries across the world. That’s 200,000,000 more users than its closest rival Facebook Messenger.
